Was Michael Jackson Autistic?

Doctor Claims Autism Explains Jackson’s Genius & Poor Social Skills

Michael Jackson's undisputed talent is discussed alongside reports of his limited social interaction. Could Autism be the reason behind both?

Following his unexpected death on June 25th 2009 at age 50, the world has marvelled at the genius of Michael Jackson and wondered at his lonely personal life. One doctor believes his unusual expertise and hindering social difficulties was due to Autism.

The doctor, who wished to remain anonymous, was called to Jackson’s Las Vegas hotel in 2003 for an unrelated query, but whilst there noticed “the singer displayed classic signs of autism, the brain development disorder of which symptoms include poor social interaction and communication, abnormal intensity or focus, severe insomnia and unusual eating habits.”

Various reports about Jackson’s life seem to corroborate the fact that he might have either being mildly autistic or an Autistic Savant: a person with developmental disorders but achieving one area of brilliance or expertise.

Poor Social Interaction and Communication

Sufferers of Autism are said to be “high functioning individuals who may have active but distinctly odd social approaches.” It’s common knowledge that Jackson seemed uncomfortable interacting with others. He rarely did any interviews and except when reading from a script, rarely said more than a few words when accepting awards.

“[Jackson had] two personalities” said Motown Records founder Berry Gordy speaking at his former artists’ memorial. “Offstage he was shy, soft spoken and childlike, but when he took the stage in front of his screaming fans, he turned into another person; a master, a take-no-prisoner showman.”

Throughout his adulthood, Jackson preferred to be in the company of children. From his arrival at the 1984 Grammy’s carrying 12 year old Emmanuel Lewis as his guest, to his friendships with Macaulay Culkin, Jackson was regularly seen with children and invited them for sleepovers in his house where they watched Disney movies and played computer games.

There’s a misconception that those with autism prefer to be alone; they don’t, but they find forming friendships difficult. This is true with Jackson, who once told a friend “Even at home, I'm lonely. I sit in my room and sometimes cry. It is so hard to make friends, and there are some things you can't talk to your parents or family about. I sometimes walk around the neighborhood at night, just hoping to find someone to talk to." (“Michael Jackson’s Alleged Addictions: Experts Weigh In”, MTV News, July 2, 2009)

Jackson’s unusual friendships and odd social decisions (like covering his children’s faces in public) could be a symptom of autism.

Abnormal Intensity and Focus

Another sign of Autism is the sufferer’s high levels of intense focus: “Pursuit of specific and narrow areas of interest is one of the most striking features” Again, this is consistent with early reports of Jackson as a child studying musician James Brown for hours and then copying his moves.

Vincent Paterson, who directed some of his music famous videos recalls watching Jackson “rehearse a dance sequence for four hours in front of a mirror until it felt like second nature. That’s how he developed the moonwalk, working on it for days if not weeks until it was organic. He took an idea that he had seen some street kids do and perfected it.” (“Pop Icon, Michael Jackson is Dead”, New York Times, June 26, 2009)

Jackson’s ability to hone into a single dance routine or musical idea and focus on it for long periods enabled him to become the best, but it could also have been a symptom of a high-performing type of autism.

Sufferers also tend to have high levels of imagination and an obsessive single interest. Bill Gates, who was passionate about computers from an early age was said to be autistic, as was the great painter Michelangelo whose intense focus enabled him to paint the Sistine Chapel.

Steven Wiltshire from England can look at any city from above once then draw panoramically accurate aerial pictures of what he’s seen, and Daniel Tammet can recite Pi from memory to 22,514 digits. Both are Autistic Savants, so could Jackson have been a savant too, able to mask any social disabilities behind his musical genius?

Unusual Eating Habits and Severe Insomnia

According to experts, those with autism sometimes have unusual eating habits and will only eat certain foods. Jackson was a vegan, and his brother Tito confirmed that he mostly ate vegetables, and that he once became addicted to carrots and ate so many his hands turned a little orange.

Autistic people also suffer from Insomnia, and Jackson’s inability to sleep was revealed after his death: “Michael Jackson was so distraught over persistent insomnia in recent months that he pleaded for a powerful sedative despite warnings it could be harmful, says a nutritionist who was working with the singer…” (“Michael Jackson was so Distraught over Insomnia that he Begged for Powerful Drug”, Huffington Post, June 30, 2009)

Perhaps Jackson’s musical magic was simply due to 45 years of working in the industry with the best and having his talent honed by his disciplinarian father and the perfectionists at Motown Records, or it could have been due to Autism.

This is another of the ridiculous articles about people speculating about Michael Jackson's mental health. From before the age of 10, Jackson was performing. As the youngest of the Jackson 5, he never had a change to cultivate friends outside the business during those years. He said in interviews that he only began to cultivate friendships outside the biz around the time he turned 25!

Most of the Jackson siblings are introverted; he was flat-out shy. However, he was trained since near babyhood to be a performer, and he excelled at that when he was onstage. The way he behaved was a result of his highly unusual circumstances. I realize it's popular to diagnose anyone and everyone, but please, this is just ridiculous.

True. But lots of times we don't find out things about someone til after they pass on. Michael being the complexed person he was, anything is open to discuss. He could have been schizophrenic or Autistic. Or whatever.

One thing is for sure, he was highly unusual and wonderful no matter what the case was with him. I'm sorrowful that he and I never got a chance to meet.

I just hope that he is enjoying the peace he never had when here on earth.
Seem like anyone who does good in this world, they get taken away. Things did seem better cause he was in it! I miss your presence Michael!
You're one of the best,anyway!

I think he had an form of autism and that explain the way he was. I`am a teacher and I see a lot of children with this problems. I think he was a wonderful person and I think we shall learn more about people with autism-Asperger. If we do so they don`t have to be soo alone.

I am very much convinced Michael had Asperger syndrome. Apart from the symptoms mentioned in the article, there was also his extreme sensitivity to pain, the obsession with his looks, the amalgamation of “clutter” in his home, his inability to understand innuendos, the sheer need to be in control of everything and to manipulate, and the struggling and escapism, when his defense crumbled.

I think that one can analize every true artist in the planet and probably find an "off" element. And maybe they are like that because the role of a real artist is to awake something timeless in all of us in order to decondition us from all the trash we receive since childhood. Deepa Chokra said that Michael used to read Sufi poetry and was reading Rabindranath Tagore (the most prominent poet in India) two weeks before his passing... And in the end, we humans don't know... it's mystery... and he is just a wonderful gift.

As a mother of an autistic son, I can totally see all the similar traits in Mr.Jackson that are in my son. He is highly intelligent, and extremely focused. Also, I stated a long time ago, around 2005 to some friends of mine (we are all teachers) that MJ showed signs of autism. His unusual infatuation with children, his inability to have relationships with others, and his desire to be left alone, are all traits of autism, even if its on a very small scale. My son possess the same attributes that MJ suffered from. I'm just saddened that no one in his life took the time to get him the help he needed, instead of profiting off of him. With proper treatment, he could’ve had a much-less tragic life.
Also, at the same time, I think its kind-of-crazy to just give someone a diagnosis without the proper testing. Whatever the case may be, I know that the world has become a much colder place since he passed away. No other “musical artists” today care about Healing the World, or looking at themselves (Man in the Mirror) in order to help change the world with their celebrity. Most of the celebs now care more about shopping, and fighting the paparazzi. No one cares anymore for the state of the world, the Earth, or even the poor. And that is the reason for the great sadness from people, concerning the death of MJ. Its bigger than autism…

I think that this article is interesting, but a little misinformed. My daughter has a form of autism, and some of the symptoms listed here aren't true. Insomnia? No. I know LOTS of people with autism since my daughter has it, and that is one I have not heard. Michael did say once that he didn't like looking people in the eyes, that *could* be a symptom, but let's remember, he also lead a life that is completely abnormal...being chased, followed, grabbed, mauled WHEREVER he went. Covering up his children's faces makes COMPLETE sense to me. He was protecting his children so that they could have a normal childhood...something Michael never had. He didn't care how strange it seemed, he did it for his children. And now, his children are being chased by the press...that is exactly what Michael didn't want. I think this article is bogus.

I've watched his interviews from when he was a young child and he did not seem autistic to me. However when he hit puberty he got progressively stranger (his voice was higher pitched at the end of puberty than at the beginning). He started wearing sunglasses all of the time in public in his early twenties, became more introverted, isolated, did not form relationships with adults his own age. If he did have autism it was induced by his extreme fame and isolation from the real world in my opinion. Also his father beat him and he was a victim of the recording industry. He also was exposed to his father's and brother's sexual excapades from a young age and had to keep it from his very religious mother. He himself was a Jehovah's Witness and was very religious. He had sexual hangups due to extreme religious guilt imo.

I'm a fan of Michael Jackson, and in the past six months I've learned very much about him and stuff - And I've read many articles like this where Doctors are speculating about Michael's mental health and apperance. I actually thinks this one fits him a lot, and he could be Autistic. He did have low social skills, and he was never the one who asked for a date, always the women etc.
But I don't know - He could've been so much and suffered many things, or not suffering from any mental disorder and stuff like that at all! That's a possibility too you know, things doesn't lways have to be negative and bad. Maybe that's just the way he was and wanted it to be? I don't have like very high social skills myself either, and I'm shy too. But I'm not Autistic.

Because he worked in the music industry since the age of 5, and because God loved him, he was a genius. If he had autism, it would have been revealed way before his unexpected death.
We will love you Michael forever!

Just view the 2010 movie, "My Name Is Khan" and thought of all the articles I have read on Michael Jackson! Denying the possibilities and seeking answers from professionals is why some children never receive the help they need to live full adult lives beyond stigmas. Zoloft was found in his home when raided so he may have been diagnosed as being depresses also.

Interesting but I still think he was different because he had a different life. I don't think I am that shy but the constant crowds and scrutiny he had to endure would drive me insane. His mother said on a tv interview that he was not shy as a child but became that way later because he felt like an animal in a cage sometimes.
As for the carrots turning his palms orange...I can belive that. My ex sister in law's son was turning orange and she was upset and took him to the doctor. The doctor asked about his diet and when he found out she gave him carrot baby food all the time because he liked it; he laughed and said to stop giving him all those carrots...they were turning his skin orange.

This is simply a neat box to put him in - an "oh, that explains it!" for small-minded people.

Why is it that if someone is different, there must be something psychologically or neurologically wrong with them.

Michael was a rich eccentric. Give any one of us a lot of money and power and talent at an early age - mix that with a lot of family and professional pressure - mix that with some normal adolescent insecurity and anxiety - and I dare you to come out the other side as anything but what most of the masses would call a "weirdo".

More like a regular guy, with every single thing about him magnified by 1000. We're all insecure, we all want to escape. He just did something about it.

Eccentric. Isolated. Briliant. Tortured. Not autistic.

Absolutely Michael had aspergers and autism!

Another symptom of aspergers is being asexual. And contrary to the ignorance of the people who think he had an unhealthy attraction to children, he could simply relate to them better because of autism and he had little to no interest in sex because he had aspergers.

Another sign is misinterpreting and taking people literally. This Youtube video confirms to me how MJ took things literally and didn't get straight away why everyone was laughing:

Maybe so , Maybe not. Micheal's statement of "if you don't know me don't judge me" comes to mind. How can this be proven if you did not have some kind of interaction to come by this conclusion. I think he was the result of his upbringing and fame from such a young age. His religious values being tested by his adultrous father and brother's' sexual behaviour, their treatment of those women and what he was taught to be moral and right by his church and his beloved mother. That was extremely conflicting and cunfusing for such a young and very religious child. Being so famous from so young and having everything you do even the way you chew gum or smile being put under a microscope and picked apart , the glare of the cameras in your face blinding you in your every movement, hounded down by reporters only looking for juicy stories after all lies sell better than the truth, truth is too simple. Innocent to the vileness in people. After not being exposed to the "vultures" who pose as friends, who only use and abuse your friendship for fame or money, smile in your face and stab you in the back after you give them your love and trust wholeheartedly. You have these adults betray you at every turn breaking your innocent heart time and time again because all you seeked and wanted and needed was a "true" friend. Betrayal even by your very own. What would you become if not reclusive, withdrawn, isolated, mistrustful. Children are usually innocent and are pretty good judge of characters they have that sixth sense of who they can trust so too are animals. Both of these were always drawn to Micheal , they sense his pureness of heart, his true love of all living creatures and he would not harm them. His love for them shone through and they saw it and they always gravitated toward him. They loved him back unconditionally without all the demands that the adults solicited. He in fact had more pleasure giving to the kids all he never had and derived pleasure from making their dreams come true.He would never harm a child or an animal . He knew what it was to be abused and hated the very thought of it.As for romance I just think because of his religious upbringing he was saving hmself for that special someone when he got married because that experience would be truly magical as the very act in that sphere would be morally and religiously correct. He did not like the thought of using and abusing women. His mother and churh instilled that deeply in him . Hence he did not want to follow in his father and brothers' groupie behaviour. After him and Lisa broke up , maybe his thinking on sex out of marriage changed as well and he dated but for him anything happening between him and any person he had a relationship with should be private as he sang "Keep It In The Closet".It was not for the press to print how many times and how he bedded someone. For me I think he always loved LMP.She became bitter after the divorce said a lot of stuff I think she regretted after because she saw him after and was photograhed with him after that divorce. When he did not take her back she became angry said more hurtful things but Michael remained a gentleman right through and made her I'm sure feel even more foolish for saying bad stuff about him . They became friend again after all the crapppy interviews she had about him. I somehow think they were still seeing each other and the press was totally unaware. Lots of people were totally unaware and they were friends in the end. They kept this secret.Hence her picture by his bed and hence her deep emotional trauma when he died. She still loved him but she settled and was somewhat happy. She had a lot more respect for him especially now she saw what a great dad he was and those children could have been hers.. His children were his world and I totally understood why he made them wear the masks- they got to be kids and no one recognised who they were when they went out and they did go out and they did have a normal life, one he did not have and one thing for sure they had a "DAD' who let them know he loved them .

My son has aspergers, he is high functioning and some of the behavior that MJ exhibited could be explained by him having asperger's syndrome.

I don't know why his fans would be upset by this. It could explain a lot of things about MJ.

My son also ate carrots till he turned orange, has poor sleep habits and gets obsessed with things. He also spends a lot of time alone and has poor social skills.

I don't know if MJ had it but it could explain many things about him. It's not a mental disorder, per se, it's a neurological disorder.

I have mentioned to some of MJ's fans that he fits some of the criteria for Asperger's or another disorder on the spectrum, exposure anxiety and some of them became upset at this suggestion thinking it meant that he was mentally deficient. Having Asperger's in no way means you have low intelligence, many of them have higher IQ's than average. I think that MJ had an IQ of between 120 - 140 judging by his intense interest in things. However I think he was off socially. I wonder if his IQ is on record in one of the schools he attended in Indiana or LA. We may never know what his true academic potential was. He clearly had an IQ higher than average judging by his interest in reading alone.

Then I have autism,I too do not socialise, find it difficult to communicate, loath my self image, but I believe that MJ suffered from overexposure to public, ever since he was 5 he was out on front of the public, I would be wanting to hide away as well and for the life of me the amount of times I wanted to have a face lift and MJ went and did it. I remember seeing him when he sang Dirty Diana he looked drop dead gorgeous, I actually thought then he could have had any woman he wanted, however I think he was looking for his Soul Mate and I don't believe that to be LMP.If you read what Brett Livingston Strong wrote about that relationship and how she pursued him it would not have happened, lets face it how long was her marriage to Nickolas Cage, she sure isn't a stable person. R.I.P. MJ your beautiful.

This is not a ridiculous article. My grandmother knew the Jackson 5 in the late 60s. They used come to her house and to borrow her car for shows. She was close friends with Mr. Franklin. She used to tell me, that I reminded her of Michael. We had many of the same quirks and behavior, so she said. I even have the Jackson 5 Christmas album that they gave her, and photos of them sitting around her dinner table.

Michael's talents went beyond performing, he drew and wrote poetry and many of his own songs.

I'm in my 30's. I was diagnoised with high functioning autism and Aspergers at 32.

As a child I lived in my own little world, performing in my bedroom. People tell me that I'm talented. And when I reveal just one side of my talents they say "What are you doing working here?"

I sing. I can vocally imitate every Disney princess singing voice, and also Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Linda Ronstandt, Charlotte Church and many more. I have an unusually wide vocal range, and perfect pitch. I was just told last week my voice is "angelic"

I can play any instrument I pick up, even if I have never seen it before, once I figure out the logic of it. On piano, I can play songs right along with the radio. I draw, paint and have had my stuff in galleries. I've won poetry awards. I write short stories, and am working on a novel (which is much more thought given than this rambling).

I've won awards in high school and college for acting. I did beauty pageants and later I did plus sized modeling professionally (I have been told that I look like either Wonder Woman or Brooke Sheilds). I was with Brand Model and Talent Agency. I also had David Marisch for a manager for singing, but the social pressure of it all would be too much. At events, you'd find me out in nature playing with butterflies, stray animals, or children. I like them better than people, they are more honest. I needed someone to protect me from the wolves of Hollywood, and because I couldn't find that person, I gave up at 30.

Anyway, I have been performing since I was 5 years old. On a stage is the only place I truly feel at home, and...I am friendly, but close friends are hard to come by. They often betray me when I open myself up to them, because they don't understand me. I experience great loneliness. I don't expect you to understand me either, and I'm sure like most people, you will have something mean to say about this. I can't be anyone but me.

Although I have never met MJ in person, I can relate to him.

Some of his fans are now claiming that he was an alpha-male who had many lovers who he kept secret. I'm sorry, there just is no evidence of this. He was extremely uptight sexually according to every interview I have read from women he was with over the years. The girl in the Thriller video only got to 3rd base, he was an extreme adherent to the Jehovah's Witness religion. The fans make all sorts of things up about him which there is no proof of.

I definitely think he had a form of asperger's disorder from studying him in different interviews, etc. He had trouble forming relationships with people his own age and lived in a fantasy world. On the other hand I don't think he was gay either.

I am glad to see someone else intelligently writing about this. All the research I have done from his early life, some of the interviews and how he relates to others, awkwardness, seeming problems with proprioceptive chalenges, the large size of his head comparatively, are all probable signs alone. Put them all together and he had to be undiagnosed autism. Which is NOT a bad thing! And, it is not a "mental health" question. Autism is not a mental illness, but a brain difference/disability. Many people are able to overcome the challenges associated with autism, and sadly some are unable to due to lack of access to education and supports.
